Chapter Rifle

"2008 SCI NEWI Chapter Rifle"

Jeff Champeau was the lucky winner.

Phase 1:
Mr. Andy Huebschmann of Sunny Hill Enterprises, maker of last year's chapter rifle, is again coordinating the construction of the current rifle. They are donating the major components, and contracting with noted gunsmiths to produce a rifle of the highest quality.

Based on the venerable Mauser action, this rifle will blend unbeatable reliability with impeccable style. The large Mauser claw extractor securely grabs the rim of the cartridge and guides it into the chamber, virtually eliminating the chance of a miss feed. The barrel, too, is designed with reliability in mind. All of the sight components, the barrel mounted sling stud, and the auxiliary recoil lug are machined from the same steel as the barrel. Your sights will never fall off in the middle of the hunt!

The trigger guard assembly is also made by Sunny Hill. It is a “drop” design to accommodate 4 magnum rounds.

Chambered for the powerful .458 Lott, the winner of this rifle will hold amazing power in his hands. Pushing a 500 grain bullet at well over 2300 feet per second, the muzzle energy is calculated at over three tons!!!  Cape buffalo will tremble at the mere mention of your name!

The action is topped with quick detachable scope rings. These rings are mated to integral dovetails on the top of the receiver.

We will attempt to keep you informed as this project progresses. We are anticipating completion before the end of this year. The Chapter Rifle drawing will be held at the 2008 Hunter Expo. Perhaps you will be the lucky winner.

Phase 2:
The metal work is complete and back from Dean’s Gunshop in Rexburg, Idaho! The integral barrel has been trimmed to length, threaded to fit the Mauser action, and chambered for the potent .458 Lott. The outside of the barrel has been polished, removing the marks left from the machining process. Dean Zollinger has modified the action to feed the cigar sized shells and all internal surfaces have received his loving attention.

Phase 3:
With the metal work done we have forwarded the barreled action and a chunk of walnut to the talented stockmakers LeRoy and Connie Barry owners of Canyon Creek Gunstocks in Hamilton, Montana. Leroy will shape and finish the stock and then hands them to his wife Connie for checkering.

When we get the rifle back from them, it will be completely done. The stock will be finished, checkered, the metal will be blued, and the sights will be regulated. All we will have to do is to mount a scope and take it to the range for final testing.
